Chapter 5 Social Media

As the Squad Goals Network acts as a collective with no real “leader,” it was decided that an effective method of social media coordination would be a rotating social media “owner.”

5.1 Hashtag #SquadGoalsNetwork

As data is collected on the usage of the #SquadGoalsNetwork hashtag and other related tags over social media, we will present it here.

5.1.1 Hashtag time series

5.1.2 Hashtag geographic sources (US)

5.2 Twitter Account

Twitter currently serves as a hub for communication around the #SquadGoalsNetwork, and authors have the ability to administer the associated accounts to help keep the conversation going.

The main account for Twitter is @SqdGlsNtwrk. Additionally, the PLN uses the hashtag #SquadGoalsNetwork to promote posts and content on Twitter related to the PLN’s mission and goals. With both the account and the hashtag in play, authors might consider using TweetDeck (https://tweetdeck.twitter.com/) as a way to view activity around both streams of content, particularly during a monthly social media takeover.

As authors generate sets of evergreen tweets, they will be posted here on this playbook for easy access.

5.3 Monthly SGN Twitter Takeovers

One of the main tasks that authors will complete is to volunteer to administer the website and social media in what we are referring to as a Monthly Social Media Takeover. For one month, the author will help keep conversations alive over Twitter and on the #SquadGoalsNetwork website.

5.3.1 Responsibilities

Here are the basic tasks for the takeover:

  1. Get in contact with the person whose month is coming to a close. They will give you access to the Twitter account. Ask them about anything they’ve got ongoing that you can piggyback on.
  2. Change the profile picture on Twitter to your image. You can use the template in Google Drive to combine your image with the #SquadGoalsNetwork logo. The links to these are available in the Slack team.
  3. Change the Twitter bio to state that you are the host for the month and list your Twitter handle.
  4. Throughout the month, tweet from the @SqdGlsNtwrk handle.
  5. Consider using the various hashtags like #SGNpets, #SquadGoalsPlaylist, and others.
  6. Review and publish all posts that come in over FeedWordPress as Pending.
  7. Publish all posts that come in as narratives:
    1. Go to the Formidable entry first and add a Featured Image.
    2. Next, go to Posts, set the author as Squad Goals Network, and publish the post.

Note: If it is not your month to take over social media, tweet from your own handle and include both @SqdGlsNtwrk and #SquadGoalsNetwork in the tweet.

5.3.2 Suggestions for Activities

Authors can choose what they would like to do in their takeover activities, but here are some suggestions to help out with the planning and facilitation:

  • Write a blog post that reflects on a theme you select for the month
    • Share related readings and resources
    • Share people that are doing work in this area and include their tweets
    • Present questions to answer over the course of the month
  • Weekly writing prompt
  • Recruit folks to submit stories
  • Tweet (or schedule tweets) for stories that are posted
  • Host a Twitter Chat
  • Participate in a Twitter Chat
  • Share out posts from other authors on site
  • Respond to tweets with #SquadGoalsNetwork hashtag
  • Live tweet events that you go to (conferences, workshops, symposiums)
  • Write a blog post reflecting on your takeover for the month and how it went
    • What new resources did you find?
    • What new people did you connect to/with?
    • What did you answer of the questions that you presented previously?

5.4 Other Social Media Ideas

Currently, the authors are looking to focus on Twitter. However, in the future, the team will consider adding the following points of engagement:

  • Instagram
  • Snapchat, especially for conference engagement
